You're the super-slacker!!
Homework?
What's that? Studying? Not in your vocabulary.
You hardly study and almost never do your work
and yet, by some divine intervention, you're
still surviving. And you come to school so
un-often, your teachers have pratically
forgotten that you even exist. Go, you slacker,
you!!

DEDICATED TO: Fellow DEBATERS (2)

Hey guys,
adding on to my entry on monday =) grinz

Although we live in a world of liberties and democracy, rights and what not, it doesnt mean that all these priviledges (rights are priviledges, we only have them cos the people in power think that we deserve to have them or we should have them) should be used / exercised without caution or responsibility.

Talking about people behind their backs and making snide comments on the WORLD WIDE WEB aint exactly the smartest thing to do. Unless you believe that it is alright for the whole world to read abt the not so nice things and rude stuff you write about people whom you do not know, or really havent done anything to them at all. so yeah, dont bitch abt others on your blog, it really isnt very nice. besides what gives you the right to say harmful things about anyone at all, whether you know the person or not, especially if you dont know who the person is and really you have no common friends.

secondly, no matter how bad debate motions can be, it really isnt any reason for you to behave in a bad and unfriendly manner on the floor. if you think it is weighted (which is the right word to use) then you should try to find logic which are reasonable and not truistic to run, really trust me, all sides of any motions is runable. It all comes down to how much you want it. If you want it bad enough, 30 minutes is enough to get a good and solid case running. Time is, in some sense, of no essense. even when you lose guys, dont and i mean it, dont be bad losers, always shake your opponent's hands and be nice about it. It is after all a debate, there must be a winner and a loser. Smile, cos it isnt the end of the world, just because you lose a debate. (I mean it, if anyone of you guys DEPers behave badly at JGs this year, trust me, I wont talk to you for a while. Bad behaviour is never truly justified, especially when you merely lose a debate.)

remember, the world needs more nice people. Am i MATURED or what, man.

DEDICATED TO: FRIENDS & FELLOW kid DEBATERS,

Here's to a fabulous school year ahead. I sincerely wish that all of you will get the results you want and attain the goals you set to achieve.

But as we move on to the next year, going back to our teams (me included) and prepping for the new season, there are some things which I would like to share with you guys and hope that you will bear them in mind.

it has been a great year for me, spending wonderful times and having great memories with the Barker Boys, the IJ Girls and all 39 DEPers, the new friends I made – Auggie, darius, Feli. You guys have taught me a lot and I have learnt a lot from you. (side: The great friends I have become – Sharm, grace, Jolynn, Nalli, and great friends i always had, Ren, Anis, Kari, Steph, Alexis, Sam, Mariam, Winston, Adrian, Rae)

I think I am not wrong or misguided to say the debates is your life for many of you. Everything you do inadvertently get associated with debates. It is good to be passionate about something and great that you have a goal and you want to reach that goal and achieve standards which might have never been attained or reached. But remember there is a fine line between passion and obsession. The world is a huge place and there are many other things to do, there are many other activities to explore, there are many other views to see. Debate is just but one of them. Go out and see the world. Experience the diversity that is out there. Learn how to appreciate the subtleties of life, go and view the world differently. When we debate, we talk about many things, rhetorically or otherwise. But at some point in our lives, we have to stop living through the things we say cause that is not the real world outside. At some point, debate should cease to be our lives. I am not saying that it is bad to be passionate and really upbeat about debates, in fact I think it is great that you guys have something to be passionate about, cause the world lacks passionate people. I am saying that it should not be what our lives revolve around. Venture out when you can, only then can you find your true gifts. Being so insular, being so attached to one circuit of people, can truly be really unhealthy at times.

you guys have commented that I lead an interesting life. Yeah I think I do, only because I don’t only debate. I have lots of friends beyond the debate circuit. All my closest friends are not debaters. That’s why despite spending tons of hours with you guys, i still live such an interesting life.

Competition is part and parcel of life, so is victory and defeat. The thing to take away from all these is humility. All these are really transient. Ten years down the road, it is not the championship titles, individual rankings that matter, it is the friendships, bonds and memories you bring away that matters. It is the learning process that matters. Winning is an added bonus. It is what we all learn from each competition that truly matters. I have been there like all of you, filled with anxieties and desire to win (sadly enough, actually not really, I lost both my semis by half a mark =P), even as I coach now, I still feel the same adrenaline rush the same pulsating excitement as I sit there and watch my teams debate. But at the end of the day, victory and defeat is just that victory and defeat. Sometimes if you look beyond all these you will then realize that in fact, being overtly competitive makes you mad. Being overtly competitive can turn you into someone who is unfriendly and unapproachable. All of you are special in your own ways, unique and individually different. This is what I for one greatly and truly appreciate. I also for one, wont like to see that uniqueness and individuality being destroyed and consumed by unnecessary competition.

Being bitchy and snide are some of the things that we are guilty of wittingly and unwittingly. There are times I admit when I get really amused by the things we do and say, and although I know that it is wrong and not very nice to do such things, I still go ahead and egg you guys on anyway. But we just have to bear in mind that debaters are viewed by the rest of the world through different eyes. It has something to do with debates being for the intelligentsia and intellectual elites of society. that is why we get unknowingly labeled as arrogant, snobbish, even elitist. Trust me, I get a lot of this things, cause I do admit that I do behave in an intellectually arrogant and snobbish way especially in school. Not saying that is right, just that sometimes I cant help it. So as you guys go on developing intellectually and cerebrally, stop and check at times, the human side of your character. Stop and consider the feelings of others, cause not everything is rational. Some things are just emotional and we have to consider others. If someone behaves in an arrogant or bitchy manner towards you, you don’t have to stoop to their level, be gracious, be above that, and be mature. You can always be the better person out there. If there is one thing the world needs more, it is nice people.

This is a really long entry, but I guess I do have quite a bit to say as we go on the new year. Life will not be smooth for all of us all the time. There are going to be days and times in which life just suck big time. There are going to be times when you just want to give up and not go on. It is as simple as that. Try to look at the bright side of life, and try to take something positive always. I firmly believe that God allows everything to happen for a reason and for everything that happens, there is something to be learnt from it. It was a great disappointment for me, having to give up Boston for NUS, but on hindsight, I am glad that I stayed cause I wont have know any of you otherwise, I wont have been able to know you guys and become fast friends with you. So even when things look as if they are able to collapse and crash you to death, be strong and walk away strong. Cause life is precious and life goes on. In the practical world we live in, sometimes you just have to grimace and shoulder on, cause time passes by and the world simply doesn’t have time to waste that way.

If you guys realized, I have been choosing my words really carefully and scrupulously. That is because, I am not against any of the things I have mentioned, rather it is the excess of it that I am cautioning you guys about. So yeah, while you go about enjoying the New Year and getting started on new things and journeys. This is what I want to say to you guys. I hope that I have been able to teach you guys more than just debates (if I taught you anything at all). I also hope that I have been more than just a coach.

So yeah, Cheers and have a great year ahead. =)
